EPD-Online: IBU’s digital platform

EPD-Online is the digital platform of the Institut Bauen und Umwelt e. V. (IBU) for creating, verifying and publishing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). As a manufacturer, you bring together your EPD content here and edit it ready for submission. IBU operates the EPD programme and sets its rules; EPD-Online supports the digital workflow.

The benefits of EPD-Online

Creating an EPD involves manufacturers, life cycle assessment consultants and independent verifiers. EPD-Online brings this collaboration together on a shared platform, helping you keep track of your EPD content and giving everyone involved a common basis for their work.

Work together on the latest version. You and your appointed consultants work on the EPD using the same underlying data. Different permission levels control access, making it easier to coordinate contributions.

Focus on your content. EPD-Online provides the relevant reference documents and ensures a consistent EPD layout. This lets you concentrate on your product information and the results of your life cycle assessment.

A digital workflow through to publication. Data entry, submission, verification and publication are handled through the platform. Your EPD data is also made available in a machine-readable format, providing a basis for further digital use.

Over 2,000 EPDs from several hundred companies

Over 2,000 EPDs from several hundred companies have already been created using EPD-Online. Whether you are preparing your first EPD or declaring additional products, you will be using a platform that has supported numerous EPD projects.

EPD-Online for manufacturers and associations

EPD-Online is designed for companies and associations looking to create EPDs within the IBU programme. Manufacturers and appointed consultants can collaborate on the content, with different permission levels controlling access. Verification and publication are also handled through the platform.

Create, edit and submit your EPD

Enter your product information and transfer the results of its life cycle assessment into the EPD. The platform provides relevant reference documents and ensures a consistent document layout. Once the content and required supporting documents are complete, you can submit your EPD for verification.

Life cycle assessment: the foundation of your EPD

The life cycle assessment (LCA) is carried out beforehand, outside EPD-Online, by suitably qualified specialists within your company or an appointed LCA consultant. This involves collecting and assessing data about your product and its manufacture. The results are then transferred into EPD-Online. The platform itself does not perform LCA calculations or provide LCA background data.

Your path to a published EPD

First, identify the applicable Product Category Rules (PCR) and collect the data needed for the life cycle assessment. The EPD content and background report are then prepared. Submission is followed by independent verification, with publication completing the process. EPD-Online supports digital editing and coordination between the parties involved.
